Speech/Language therapy is offered to support children and their families that are concerned about a variety of areas including but not limited to development of speech sound production skills, language development, fluency (stuttering), and pragmatic/social language skills. We provide evaluations, treatment and consultation with school teams.
At Parent to Child, there are several Speech/Language Pathologists that provide an array of services for both children and adults.
We offer the opportunity to receive a thorough speech and language assessment which can include a classroom observation, a home observation and formal testing of your a child’s speech/language skills, depending on the concerns. These skills include articulation/speech sound development, language skills (how a child understands and uses language to communicate), fluency (stuttering), pragmatic skills as well as feeding/swallowing.
SERVICE DELIVERY MODELS
We provide a variety of service delivery models. Children can participate in individual therapy or group therapy at our facility, or individual therapy at school or at home, depending on the distance from center city. Therapy includes individualized plans based on an assessment done by Parent to Child, an outside assessment by another speech/language pathologist, or goals/plans set out in an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) devised by a school district. We work together with the network of providers with whom children are connected including teachers, babysitters and other therapists. We believe in a collaborative, interactive approach to speech and language therapy.
Our therapists also have experience with assessing and providing treatment for adults with speech/language disorders or those wishing to improve their speech/language skills.

WHAT IS SPEECH/LANGUAGE THERAPY?
Speech/Language therapy addresses a very broad spectrum of concerns, mostly regarding communication skills. A child can be evaluated and receive treatment for concerns regarding intelligibility (how well you understand your child), the content of language (vocabulary, complexity of phrases), receptive language skills (how well we understand the language around us), and language used to initiate, maintain and engage in social interactions).
WHY MIGHT YOU CONSIDER SPEECH/LANGUAGE THERAPY?
Regarding Speech Sounds/Intelligibility
It can be very frustrating for your child, and for you when they are difficult to understand. The evaluation process allows us to see exactly what sounds are not being produced correctly, and we can often see why they are not produced correctly based on patterns or similarities in errors. In addition, sound errors may impact the ability to read and decode these sounds for children in the early stages of literacy.
Regarding Language Concerns
When your child is on the playground, school, or at home, and his/her language (use of appropriate grammar, word order, vocabulary,) is simple when compared to other children his/her age, it might be beneficial to consider a receptive/expressive language assessment. Many times, we feel the children will “grow out of it,” which is sometimes the case. However, there are some children who will require intervention to help with improving the use of language structure, content, and complexity. The sooner these concerns are addressed, the more likely the child will improve. Language concerns also impact reading comprehension, story development, oral language tasks like speaking in front of the class and participating in class discussions.
